Whatever needs your students have, a day trip to us at Dudley Tunnel and Limestone Mines has plenty to offer you and your class.

To add value to your visit we offer activity sessions led by our learning staff in our education suite. These have been specially developed to meet the requirements of SEN students and are flexible to the particular needs of your class; read more about them below. We’re also happy to develop new session structures if it will benefit your students, so if you have a new idea get in touch with us!

Activity Carousel: We’ll work with you to choose a selection of different hands-on activities for your students to experience. They might explore our fossil collection, work locks on our toy canal, paint a canal-inspired work of art or something else! This session is designed to allow your students to spend as much or as little time with each activity as they choose. Our staff will be on hand to give context and extra information where appropriate.

Sensory Story: In this session, our staff will guide your group through a journey led by their senses. For example, you might discover the daily life of a child on a working canal boat through the smell of the fire, the taste of bread, brushing a horses hair, polishing the brasses and more. This session has a gentle narrative structure to connect a series of sensory experiences around a central theme.

Access Information

We work hard to make sure our site, boat trips and sessions are as accessible as they can be so that everyone can enjoy their visit to us.

Our site has accessible toilets on both floors and a lift for step-free access around the building. We also have a boat with a platform lift for those with limited mobility. Students who struggle with unfamiliar situations will benefit from our orientation guides which show images of the boat trip and Portal building. We also have maps of the building and our exhibition gallery has a Makaton symbol trail.

You might find this orientation guide useful for students who benefit from knowing what to expect when they visit somewhere new.

You can read more about the accessibility of our site and our boat trips in our access guide, but if there's anything else you want to know please do get in touch by email or by phone (0121 557 6265) - we're always happy to chat about how we can help your students enjoy their day with us.
